Arzana lies at the foot of Punta La Marmora, the highest peak in Sardinia at 1,834 metres, and is the municipality of Ogliastra closest to the heart of the Gennargentu. At 680 metres above sea level, with around 2,400 inhabitants, it is a true mountain village where nature retains primordial qualities rare in Mediterranean Europe. The forests of Montarbu, the silence of ancient holm-oak and yew woodlands, hidden waterfalls such as Piscina Irgas, and the pastoral tradition of transhumance together form an intact world that still belongs to those who inhabit it. Arzana is part of the Sardinian Blue Zone, the areas of exceptional human longevity.

The Secrets of Arzana

Punta La Marmora: the roof of Sardinia

At 1,834 metres above sea level, Punta La Marmora is the highest peak in all of Sardinia. Arzana is the municipality that comes closest to it from the Ogliastran side, and from here trails depart that lead all the way to the summit through dwarf juniper woodlands, high-altitude pastures, and scenery of absolute Alpine grandeur — unusual for a Mediterranean island. The mountain takes its name from the Piedmontese explorer and military officer Alberto Ferrero della Marmora, who carried out the first topographical surveys in the nineteenth century. Reaching the summit is an experience that changes the way one looks at the island.

The Montarbu forest: a primordial ecosystem

The state forest of Montarbu, shared between the territories of Arzana and Seui, is one of the most important and best-preserved forested areas in Sardinia. Within it grow thousand-year-old yews — some among the oldest in Europe — monumental holm oaks, downy oaks, hollies, and maples. The fauna is extraordinarily rich: golden eagles, mouflon, wild boar, Sardinian foxes, and a remarkable variety of birds of prey. The ecosystem has characteristics of exceptional ecological integrity, with plant species that are relics of the Tertiary era surviving thanks to the territory's isolation and conservation.

The Piscina Irgas waterfall: hidden water

Among the best-kept secrets of the Arzana territory is the Piscina Irgas waterfall, a natural wonder reachable only via a trail immersed in the forest. The water falls into a large natural pool of ice-cold, crystal-clear water, surrounded by moss-covered rocks and lush vegetation that filters sunlight to create extraordinary light effects. The difficulty of the route and its remoteness from any road make it a destination for motivated hikers, who are rewarded with a natural spectacle of rare beauty and total solitude.

Blue Zone and longevity: the secret of a long life

Arzana falls within the Sardinian Blue Zone, the geographical belt of Ogliastra and Barbagia identified by researchers as one of the five areas in the world with the highest concentration of centenarians. Scholars have linked this phenomenon to factors such as the traditional diet — rich in vegetables, legumes, pecorino cheese, and Cannonau wine — daily physical activity, social cohesion, and a deep sense of purpose tied to pastoral and agricultural work. In Arzana these elements are still alive and embedded in the fabric of everyday community life.

Easy (by car)

Beaches of the Cardedu Coastline

30 minutes by car from Arzana

Although a mountain village, Arzana is relatively close to the Ogliastran coastline. The beaches of Cardedu, reachable in about 30 minutes by car, offer contact with the crystal-clear sea of Sardinia's eastern coast. For those staying in Arzana it is possible to organise day trips combining the peaks of the Gennargentu in the morning with a swim in the sea in the afternoon — an experience difficult to replicate anywhere else.

Festivals and Traditions of Arzana

January

Feast of Sant'Antonio Abate

The feast of Sant'Antonio Abate, patron saint of animals and shepherds, is one of the most heartfelt celebrations in the traditional Arzana calendar. The great bonfires of Sant'Antonio light up the village squares on the evenings of 16 and 17 January, around which the whole community gathers with songs, dances, and votive offerings. The feast is deeply tied to Arzana's pastoral identity and retains its authenticity intact.

Spring (May)

Su Passu — Transhumance Re-enactment

In spring, Arzana celebrates the ancient transhumance routes with cultural events and historical re-enactments that recount the great seasonal movement of flocks between mountain and coastal pastures. Shepherds in traditional costume, folk music, craft demonstrations, and dairy product tastings are part of a celebration that highlights a heritage of immense anthropological importance.

Summer (July–August)

Gennargentu Trekking

During the summer months, guided excursions to the peaks of the Gennargentu are organised departing from Arzana, including the ascent of Punta La Marmora. Local guides accompany participants along trails crossing the Montarbu forest, the pastoral highlands, and the rocky ridges of the mountain, narrating the geology, wildlife, and culture of the territory. Excursions by reservation, with varying levels of difficulty.
