Gairo is a unique case in Italy: a municipality made up of three distinct centres, each with its own history and its own face. Gairo Vecchio, the original village abandoned after the tragic flood of 1951, is today a ghost village of rare evocative power. Gairo Taquisara is the new town, built to house the displaced. Gairo Sant'Elena, overlooking the coast, is home to the thermal springs of Santa Maria. Perched at 680 metres on the slopes of the Tacchi d'Ogliastra, the municipality has around 1,500 inhabitants and offers landscapes of extraordinary beauty among limestone formations, ancient silences and warm waters that rise from the earth.

The Secrets of Gairo

Gairo Vecchio: the ghost village

On 18 November 1951, the same violent flood that devastated Osini struck Gairo with destructive force. The original village, built on an unstable clay ridge, slid inexorably downward. The inhabitants were evacuated and the village abandoned forever. Today Gairo Vecchio is one of the most evocative ghost villages in Sardinia: crumbling walls, churches split in two, alleyways that end in thin air. Walking among its ruins means crossing through time, feeling the weight of history and imagining the life of a community that in a single night lost everything.

The thermal springs of Santa Maria

In Gairo Sant'Elena, the coastal hamlet of the municipality, the thermal springs of Santa Maria emerge from the ground — naturally warm waters rich in minerals that for centuries have been used by the local population for their beneficial properties. The contrast between the warmth of the waters and the coolness of the surrounding landscape creates an almost magical atmosphere. These natural thermal springs are one of the least known treasures of Ogliastra, a destination for those seeking genuine wellbeing far from commercial facilities, immersed in a natural setting that is still pure and unspoilt.

The Tacchi d'Ogliastra: the stone mountains

The territory of Gairo is embraced by the Tacchi, the iconic limestone formations that characterise the landscape of central-southern Ogliastra. These tabular plateaus, also called 'giare' or 'tacchi' in Sardinian, are the result of millions of years of erosion on ancient seabeds that rose above the surface. Around Gairo the rocks take on dramatic forms, with vertical walls that plunge sheer and summit plateaus covered in Mediterranean scrub. The resulting landscape is of rare wild beauty, perfect for hiking, climbing and nature photography.

Three villages, one community

The history of Gairo teaches resilience. When the disaster of 1951 forced the population to abandon the ancient village, the community did not dissolve: it reinvented itself. Gairo Taquisara arose from nothing, built with modern rationality on safe ground, yet animated by the same deep bonds, the same families, the same surnames. Over time Gairo Sant'Elena emerged as a coastal hub. Today the three centres coexist under a single municipal authority, held together by a powerful shared identity that has been able to transform tragedy into collective memory and memory into a source of strength.

Feast of Santa Maria

The patron saint's feast dedicated to Santa Maria is the most heartfelt moment of the year for the community of Gairo. The three centres of the municipality come together to celebrate with traditional processions, live Sardinian music, tastings of local products and moments of deep spirituality. The atmosphere is that of an authentic Ogliastran village feast, far from tourist circuits but open and welcoming to those who wish to take part with respect.

Summer (June–September)

Guided tour of Gairo Vecchio

During the summer months, guided tours of the abandoned village of Gairo Vecchio are organised, led by local guides who recount the history of the community and the tragedy of 1951. Tours take place in the morning hours to enjoy the best light among the ruins and to avoid the summer heat. An experience that blends history, emotion and reflection on the fragility of the relationship between humanity and nature.

Festival of local produce

In autumn Gairo celebrates the flavours of its land with a festival dedicated to local products: aged pecorino cheeses, traditional cured meats, pane carasau, arbutus honey and ancient sweets. Local producers open their cellars and workshops, allowing visitors to discover first-hand the production techniques handed down through generations.
