Cardedu is the youngest municipality in Ogliastra: established in 1984 as a split from Jerzu, it has around 1,900 inhabitants and sits 60 metres above sea level, between the last spurs of the inland hills and the Tyrrhenian coast. What makes it unique throughout Sardinia is its coastal landscape: dark, almost black volcanic boulders rising straight out of a blindingly turquoise sea. A chromatic contrast of rare visual power that has transformed, in just a few decades, what was once a purely agricultural village into a tourist destination of growing appeal. At the foot of the village the marina stretches out with its beaches, while inland the Cannonau vineyards shape the rolling hillside.

The Secrets of Cardedu

The youngest municipality in Ogliastra

Cardedu was established as an independent municipality only in 1984, breaking away from the ancient comune of Jerzu. Before that date, the inhabitants of the marina and the surrounding countryside had to travel to the hilltop village of Jerzu for every administrative matter. The birth of the new municipality gave official recognition to a local identity that had already consolidated in practice, rooted in the coast and in the maritime and agricultural vocation of the territory. Today Cardedu represents an interesting case of a young community building its own narrative identity with the awareness that tradition and innovation must go hand in hand.

The geology of contrast: volcanoes meet the Tyrrhenian Sea

Cardedu's stretch of coastline is the result of volcanic activity that affected eastern Sardinia millions of years ago. The dark, almost black basaltic and andesitic rocks contrast with the pale sand and transparent water, creating one of the most photographed landscapes on the entire island. This meeting of volcanic geology and marine erosion has sculpted sea stacks, reefs and coves of extraordinary beauty. For geologists and earth-science enthusiasts, Cardedu's coast is an open book on the geological history of Sardinia and the Mediterranean.

Cardedu's Cannonau: a wine of character

Despite the municipality's small size, the Cardedu territory boasts a long winemaking tradition tied to Cannonau, the native red grape variety that in Ogliastra reaches some of its most powerful and long-lived expressions. The volcanic soils — free-draining and mineral-rich — give the wines of this area a particular minerality and complexity. Several local wineries produce excellent DOC Cannonau, which has won awards at national level. The September harvest is still a community event, bringing together young and old in a collective ritual whose roots run deep into the village's history.

From agricultural village to tourist destination

Cardedu's transformation into a tourist destination happened relatively quickly, concentrated mainly from the 1990s onwards. The discovery of the coast's extraordinary beauty attracted investment in accommodation and dining, without completely stripping the village of its agricultural and rural character. Even today the historic centre bears the marks of the pastoral and farming economy that defined the local community for centuries, while the marina has developed in a more decidedly tourist-oriented direction. This dual face — ancient hinterland and modern coast — is one of Cardedu's most interesting traits.

Cardedu's most famous beach is a visual experience unlike any other in Sardinia: basaltic boulders of almost black colour, smoothed by marine erosion, rise out of the pale sand and turquoise water in a chromatic contrast of tremendous impact. The dark volcanic rocks form natural pools and sheltered inlets where the sea is always calm. The beach has some facilities during the summer season — sunbeds and umbrellas — but retains its dramatic landscape intact. Highly popular with photographers and snorkelling enthusiasts for the wealth of marine life among the rocks.

A hidden, intimate cove reached by following a short path through Mediterranean scrubland. Museddu beach is a little-known corner of paradise, unfamiliar even to many Ogliastrans: very fine cream-coloured sand, crystal-clear water ranging from emerald green to cobalt blue, and an almost unreal silence even in August. The absence of permanent facilities and the relatively challenging access keep the crowds away. Bring water and food as there are no services on site. One of the most beautiful and least celebrated beaches on the entire eastern coast.

The village's main stretch of shoreline — the most equipped and easiest to reach — with beach clubs, equipment hire and a small marina. The sandy beach extends for several hundred metres with gently shelving water, ideal for families. In summer the area comes alive with tourists and local young people; out of season it rediscovers a relaxing calm. From the marina jetty there is a panoramic view along the coast and, on clear days, across the Gulf of Tortolì.

Feast of San Simplicio

Cardedu's main religious celebration honours its patron saint San Simplicio with a solemn procession through the village streets, sung masses and moments of community sharing. The celebrations span several days and include musical and gastronomic events that showcase local produce. The feast is an important occasion for the Cardedu community, including emigrants who often return to their home village specifically to take part.

Cannonau Festival

A food-and-wine event dedicated to the Cannonau produced in the local territory. Local wineries open their doors for guided tastings, and stands are set up with typical Ogliastra products: sheep's cheese, pane carasau, artisan cured meats and traditional sweets. The festival attracts wine enthusiasts and tourists seeking authenticity, and is an important vehicle for promoting the territory through sustainable tourism.

July–August

Summer at the Marina

A programme of summer events organised at Cardedu's marina, including concerts, dance evenings, photography exhibitions and cultural initiatives. The programme is curated by the municipality in collaboration with local associations and coastal businesses. This is when Cardedu welcomes the greatest number of visitors and the local and tourist communities mingle in the lively atmosphere of the seafront.
