Clinging to the slopes of the majestic Tacchi d'Ogliastra at 430 metres above sea level, Jerzu is one of the most fascinating villages in eastern Sardinia. With around 3,100 inhabitants, it is known worldwide as «The City of Wine» thanks to its Cannonau di Jerzu DOC, a powerful and velvety red wine that some scholars consider the oldest in the Mediterranean. The vines climb the granite hillsides around the village, tended by families who have passed down winemaking traditions for generations. Dominating the landscape, however, are the Tacchi: imposing limestone plateaus with sheer vertical walls — remnants of ancient coral reefs — rising from the Mediterranean scrubland like stone cathedrals. Jerzu is a place where geology, history, and wine culture merge into an authentic and unforgettable experience.

The Secrets of Jerzu

The oldest wine in the Mediterranean

Cannonau — known as Grenache in France and Garnacha in Spain — may have its origins right here in Sardinia. Analysis of grape seeds found at Nuragic sites dates vine cultivation on the island to over 3,000 years ago, making Cannonau di Jerzu one of the strongest candidates for the title of oldest wine in the Mediterranean. Its extraordinary concentration of polyphenols and resveratrol is also considered one of the reasons for the exceptional longevity of Ogliastra's inhabitants.

The Tacchi: stone cathedrals born from the sea

The Tacchi d'Ogliastra are limestone formations dating back to the Jurassic period, approximately 180 million years ago, when this entire area was submerged beneath a tropical sea. Erosion and tectonic uplift sculpted these characteristic stepped plateaus over millennia, with vertical walls that in some places exceed 200 metres. They are habitat for rare species such as Bonelli's eagle and the Sardinian mouflon, and represent a geological phenomenon unique in the entire Mediterranean.

The Cantina Antichi Poderi di Jerzu

Founded in 1950 as a cooperative of local wine growers, the Cantina Antichi Poderi di Jerzu is today one of the most important wine-producing establishments in Sardinia. It brings together over 400 member growers and produces millions of bottles every year, exported worldwide. Its architecture — a modernist building integrated into the village rock — has itself become a symbol of Jerzu. The cellars hewn directly into the living rock maintain a constant temperature ideal for ageing Cannonau.

Cortes Apertas: the courtyards that open to the world

Every autumn Jerzu takes part in «Cortes Apertas», the cultural event that involves the villages of Ogliastra by transforming courtyards, cellars, and private homes into exhibition spaces open to the public. In Jerzu the event takes on a special flavour: the ancient courtyards of the historic centre are fragrant with must and filled with Cannonau tastings, displays of local crafts, and traditional Sardinian music. It is the moment when the village tells its story through its most authentic flavours and traditions.

The most accessible summit of the Tacchi di Jerzu offers a breathtaking 360° panorama over Ogliastra, from the Gulf of Arbatax to the peaks of the Gennargentu. The trail winds through Mediterranean scrubland, junipers, and holm oaks, with the limestone walls turning golden at sunset. From the top you can spot the nests of Bonelli's eagle and, with luck, mouflons grazing on the rocks.

One of the most spectacular nature trails in inland Ogliastra, following a circular route across the limestone plateau of Taccu Murru. The vegetation changes dramatically from the low scrub of the slopes to the holm oak and downy oak forests on the summits. The sheer rock faces are a paradise for rock climbing and via ferrata. In spring the wildflowers make the landscape extraordinarily colourful.

A gentle route that winds through the historic Cannonau vineyards on the hills around Jerzu. The trail allows visitors to discover traditional «bush vine» cultivation techniques, understand the terroir, and appreciate how the vine adapts to the granite rock of Ogliastra. In September, during the harvest, it is possible to watch and join in the grape picking. The route ends ideally with a visit to the Cantina Antichi Poderi.

A striking woodland area near Jerzu, characterised by a dense forest of holm oaks, strawberry trees, and centuries-old junipers. A place of peace and silence where wildlife — wild boar, foxes, pine martens — finds refuge. The forest tracks are ideal for hiking or mountain biking, with numerous picnic areas shaded by the trees. In autumn the undergrowth fills with porcini mushrooms.

Festivals and Traditions of Jerzu

Calici di Stelle

The most magical night of summer in Jerzu: beneath the starlit sky of Ogliastra, the streets of the historic centre come alive with Cannonau tastings, live music, and performances. The event is part of the national «Calici di Stelle» circuit promoted by the Wine Tourism Movement, but in Jerzu it takes on a distinctly local dimension as producers open their cellars and share the story of their wine under the August shooting stars.

Cannonau Wine Festival

The most important celebration of the year for Jerzu: entire days dedicated to Cannonau, with guided tastings, pairings with typical Ogliastra products (pecorino cheeses, cured ham, culurgiones), winery visits, and conferences on Sardinian wine culture. The Cantina Antichi Poderi opens its doors for exclusive tours among the ageing barrels. A must for wine enthusiasts.

Cortes Apertas

Jerzu opens its historic courtyards to the public as part of this event held throughout Ogliastra. Cellars, craft workshops, and private homes become exhibition spaces where visitors can discover local craftsmanship, traditional gastronomy, and Sardinian folk music. Cannonau wine is the star throughout, served in traditional terracotta jugs while groups in costume perform traditional Ogliastra dances and songs.

Feast of San Quirico

Jerzu's patron feast in honour of Saints Quiricus and Julitta, with the traditional procession in Sardinian costume through the village streets. The women wear ancient Ogliastra garments decorated with gold and silver embroidery, while horsemen escort the statue of the saint. The day concludes with traditional dances in the square and a large communal dinner featuring dishes from local tradition.

Open Harvest

During the harvest season, Jerzu invites tourists and enthusiasts to take part in picking Cannonau grapes in the village's historic vineyards. An authentic and rewarding experience that allows participants to understand the wine cycle from vine to cellar. The day ends with a convivial lunch among the rows of vines, with new wine, pane carasau, and local cheeses. Bookings are required and must be made through the Cantina Antichi Poderi.
