Mid layers — great for trekking, some rain possible

Girasole is one of the smallest municipalities in Ogliastra, with around 1,300 inhabitants and a position almost at sea level — just 5 metres above — at the mouth of the Rio Girasole. The name, which in Italian evokes the sunflower, the symbol of the summer sun, carries all the luminosity of this corner of eastern Sardinia. Despite its proximity to Tortolì, Girasole maintains its own quiet, rural identity, surrounded by vineyards and wetlands where flamingos and herons nest. A place that surprises those who arrive by chance and wins over those who seek it out deliberately.

The Secrets of Girasole

Flamingos at the mouth of the Rio Girasole

The mouth of the Rio Girasole is one of the most spectacular and least-known corners of Ogliastra. The shallow, nutrient-rich waters attract annual colonies of pink flamingos, grey herons, little egrets and several species of wild ducks. The wetland that forms at the confluence of the river and the sea is a precious microhabitat, protected yet accessible to birdwatchers equipped with binoculars and patience. At dawn and dusk, the sight of flamingos moving through the still water, reflected in perfect symmetry, is a beauty that is hard to forget.

A name like a flower: the origin of the place name

The name Girasole comes directly from the Italian word for sunflower, the well-known flower that turns its head to follow the sun throughout the day. According to some local interpretations, the name may have been given in reference to the geographical orientation of the village, which faces east with full exposure to the rising sun that lights up the sea and the surrounding wetlands. Whatever the precise origin, the name has come to serve as an identity marker for the village — evocative and immediate — which many visitors remember with a smile even after a single brief stay.

The tradition of artisan fishing

Girasole has a long history of communities tied to fishing, both in open water and in the lagoon waters. Local fishermen have passed down age-old techniques for catching eels, mullet and grey mullet in the wetlands at the river's mouth. Even today, some families keep this tradition alive, selling fresh fish at local markets or directly to restaurateurs in the area. Artisan fishing is an integral part of the village's cultural identity and represents an example of a sustainable relationship between a human community and natural resources.

Vineyards and Cannonau: the agricultural calling

Around Girasole stretches an agricultural landscape dominated by vineyards, with a significant production of Cannonau, Sardinia's quintessential native grape variety. The flat terrain and the warm coastal microclimate of Ogliastra, tempered by the sea breeze, create ideal conditions for the ripening of the grapes. Some local wineries produce characterful wines — robust and fragrant — that represent an oenological excellence of the territory. The September harvest is still a moment of communal gathering in which the boundary between work and celebration becomes blurred.

The Beaches of Girasole

Coves, cliffs and crystal-clear waters

Beach at the Mouth of the Rio Girasole

5 minutes by car from the centre

A stretch of sandy, wild coastline that forms where the Rio Girasole meets the Tyrrhenian Sea. The beach is wide and rarely crowded, with very fine sand and crystal-clear water that shelves gently. The contrast between the riparian vegetation of the river, the wetlands alongside it and the deep blue of the sea creates a landscape of great charm. There are no organised facilities, which guarantees an authentic bathing experience far from the crowds. An ideal destination for naturalists and for those who love places still untouched.

Lido di Girasole — Girasole
Easy

Lido di Girasole

10 minutes on foot from the centre

The most easily accessible and equipped stretch of shoreline in the municipality, with golden sand and shallow water suitable for children. In summer some basic facilities are available. The beach is part of the long sandy strip connecting Tortolì to Lotzorai, offering an open view towards the Gulf of Tortolì. The sandy seabed shelves gradually, making bathing safe and enjoyable for all ages.

Festivals and Traditions of Girasole

20 January

Patron Saint Festival of San Sebastiano

The feast in honour of the patron saint San Sebastiano is the most important moment in the religious and civic life of Girasole. The celebration includes a solemn mass, a procession carrying the statue of the saint through the village streets and moments of conviviality with traditional Sardinian music. Falling in the depths of winter, the event has an authentic flavour, far from the dynamics of summer tourism: it is one of the occasions in which the local community most fully recognises itself.

September (harvest time)

Wine and Local Products Festival

Coinciding with the autumn grape harvest, Girasole celebrates its food and wine produce with a festival involving local producers, wineries and enthusiasts. Cannonau and Ogliastrian white wines are tasted alongside cheeses, cured meats and traditional bread. The event is accompanied by Sardinian folk music and educational workshops on traditional viticulture, with the opportunity to take an active part in the grape picking at some of the local farms.

Autumn (October–November)

Birdwatching Festival

A nature event dedicated to birdwatching in the wetlands at the mouth of the Rio Girasole. Specialist guides lead participants along equipped trails to spot flamingos, herons, squacco herons and numerous wading species during the autumn migration. The event attracts birdwatching enthusiasts from across Italy and abroad, helping to promote the area's natural heritage through sustainable tourism.
