Lotzorai is a coastal village in the province of Ogliastra, nestled just 12 metres above sea level, with a little over 2,100 inhabitants. Located in the heart of eastern Sardinia, the village is surrounded by lush citrus groves, wetlands rich in biodiversity, and a riverfront that flows gently towards the sea. A quiet and authentic destination, it makes an excellent base for exploring the Ogliastra coastline without sacrificing tranquillity: just a few kilometres from Arbatax and Tortolì, it offers all the charm of a traditional agricultural centre that is gradually opening up to conscious tourism.

The Secrets of Lotzorai

S'Ortali 'e su Monti: the Nuragic sacred well

In the territory of Lotzorai stands one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in Ogliastra: S'Ortali 'e su Monti, a Nuragic complex that includes an ancient sacred well dating back to the Bronze Age. These wells were places of worship linked to the god of waters and were frequented by Nuragic communities for propitiatory rituals. The basalt stone structure is still well preserved and tells the story of a sophisticated civilisation that inhabited these lands three thousand years ago, capable of building monumental architecture in harmony with the surrounding natural environment.

The river delta and the wetlands

The territory of Lotzorai is crossed by a network of waterways that converge towards the sea, creating an ecosystem of wetlands of great naturalistic value. This marshy environment is home to numerous species of migratory and resident birds, amphibians and rare aquatic plants. The wetlands act as a natural filter for the waters and as a nursery for many fish species. Walking the paths that run alongside the delta at sunset is an almost mystical experience, as the reflections on the still water paint the landscape in shades of orange and pink.

The citrus groves and the agricultural tradition

The traditional economy of Lotzorai has been based for centuries on the cultivation of citrus fruits, particularly oranges and lemons, which find ideal conditions in the Ogliastra coastal microclimate. The fragrant orchards surrounding the village bear witness to a family farming tradition passed down from generation to generation. Even today, many families in the village tend their gardens and orchards using traditional techniques, producing fruits of exceptional quality destined for both local consumption and sale at regional markets. The scent of citrus blossoms in spring is one of the village's signature fragrances.

A quiet gateway to the Ogliastra coast

Lotzorai enjoys an enviable strategic position: it is just a few minutes' drive from Arbatax, with its picturesque harbour and celebrated red porphyry rocks, and equally close to Tortolì, the de facto capital of Ogliastra. This location makes it an ideal base for those wishing to explore the Ogliastra riviera — from the beaches of Cea to the coves of Barisardo — without being caught up in the summer tourist traffic. Visitors who choose Lotzorai find more affordable accommodation, fewer crowds, and an everyday authenticity that larger centres struggle to preserve.

The Beaches of Lotzorai

Coves, cliffs and crystal-clear waters

Tancau Beach — Lotzorai
Easy

Tancau Beach

5 minutes by car from the centre

A long and wide sandy beach located in the territory of Lotzorai, characterised by fine golden sand and shallow waters that make it ideal for families with children. The shoreline extends for several kilometres in a natural setting that remains largely unspoilt, with Mediterranean scrubland sloping down to the water's edge and the mountains of Ogliastra providing a scenic backdrop. In summer, the sea breeze provides a natural cooling effect. Access is easy and some support facilities are available during the summer season.

Delta Shoreline — Lotzorai
Easy

Delta Shoreline

10 minutes on foot from the centre

A wild and rarely visited stretch of coast that develops near the river delta, where the fresh waters of the river mingle with the salt waters of the sea. The beach is predominantly sandy with occasional pebble banks and offers a landscape of rare natural beauty. There are no facilities or beach establishments, making it perfect for those seeking solitude and direct contact with unspoilt nature. Ideal also for birdwatching, especially in the early morning and evening hours.

Festivals and Traditions of Lotzorai

24 June

Feast of Saint John the Baptist

The feast of the patron saint John the Baptist is the most heartfelt celebration in Lotzorai. The festivities take place on 24 June and include a solemn religious procession through the village streets, a sung mass, and moments of conviviality with traditional Sardinian music, dancing in the square and tastings of local products. In ancient times, the night of Saint John was considered magical: young people would light bonfires on the beach and pass down propitiatory rites linked to water and nature, bearing witness to a pagan cultural substratum absorbed into the Christian tradition.

Spring (March–April)

Citrus Festival

A local event dedicated to celebrating the agricultural products of the area, particularly the citrus fruits grown in the gardens and orchards around the village. During the festival, local producers display their finest fruits, tastings of juices, jams and artisan liqueurs are organised, and educational workshops are held for families. It is an opportunity to rediscover ancient varieties of oranges and lemons and to connect with the farming community that still preserves these cultivation traditions.

July–August

Lotzorai Summer Festival

A summer programme of cultural and folk events organised by the municipality and local associations. The schedule includes concerts of Sardinian and other music, traditional dance evenings, open-air film screenings and art exhibitions. An excellent opportunity to immerse oneself in the social life of the village during the warmest months and to get to know the Lotzorai community in its everyday summer life.
