Blue Zone — Sardinia

The Land
of Centenarians

Ogliastra is one of the 5 recognised Blue Zones in the world — areas where people live statistically longer. Here time doesn't stop: it slows down.

The five zones

What are
the Blue Zones?

Blue Zones are five geographic areas identified by researchers Gianni Pes and Michel Poulain (and subsequently studied by Dan Buettner for National Geographic) where the population reaches an exceptionally high average age.

  1. Ogliastra, Sardinia — The area with the highest concentration of male centenarians in the world
  2. Okinawa, Japan — The island of the longest-living women
  3. Loma Linda, California — Seventh-day Adventist community
  4. Nicoya, Costa Rica — Central American peninsula
  5. Ikaria, Greece — Eastern Aegean island

Ogliastra holds the world record for male longevity. Villagrande Strisaili has the highest concentration of male centenarians ever recorded, and the Melis family of Perdasdefogu entered the Guinness World Records as the world's longest-lived family (9 siblings with a combined age of 819 years).

The secrets

6 pillars
of longevity

🍷

Cannonau Wine

Cannonau red wine, produced for millennia in Ogliastra, contains up to 3 times more polyphenols (antioxidants) than other red wines. A glass with meals is an integral part of the centenarians' diet.

🧀

The Pastoral Diet

Pane carasau (wholegrain durum wheat flatbread), Sardinian pecorino cheese (rich in Omega-3 from pasture-raised sheep), broad beans, chickpeas, potatoes, sun-dried tomatoes. Very little meat, plenty of garden vegetables.

Vertical Terrain

Living at 600–800 metres on steep hillsides means intense daily physical exercise — climbing, descending, walking for hours with the goats. It's "unconscious training" that lasts a lifetime.

Family

In Ogliastra, the elderly are not isolated. They live with their children and grandchildren, maintain an active social role and a reason to get up every morning. Social isolation is almost non-existent.

🧬

Genetics

Millennia of geographic isolation in Ogliastra has created a unique gene pool. Studies by the University of Sassari have identified protective genetic variants against cardiovascular and degenerative diseases.

Stress (Absent)

The pace of life is slow, marked by the seasons and nature. No rush, no social competition, no commuting. "Time stress" — the main modern killer — simply does not exist.
