The Tablet of Esterzili: Rome judges Sardinia
In 69 AD, the Roman proconsul Lucius Helvius Agrippa issued a ruling in a dispute between the tribe of the Galillenses — Sardinian mountain shepherds — and the Patulcenses Campani, Roman settlers established on the coastal plains. The ruling, engraved on a bronze tablet, was found at Esterzili in 1866 and represents one of the rarest Roman legal documents ever recovered in Sardinia. The text reveals the complexity of relations between Rome and the island's indigenous peoples: not a silent conquest, but a confrontation — often conflictual — between two worlds with radically different laws, values and uses of the land.
