Ussassai is one of the most remote and authentic villages in all of Sardinia. Perched at 780 metres above sea level among deep gorges and impenetrable forests, it is home to just over 500 souls who resist the passage of time with the same tenacity as the holm oaks and yews that surround them. Here the landscape has never been tamed: valleys plunge sheer, woodlands close in on themselves and silence is a physical presence. Far from tourist routes, Ussassai preserves its pastoral identity intact — its dialect, its traditions and even the echo of ancient stories tied to Sardinian banditry. The most remote village in Ogliastra

With fewer than 500 inhabitants and roads that wind for tens of kilometres through dense woodland without meeting another settlement, Ussassai holds the unofficial title of most isolated village in the whole of Ogliastra. The main roads arrive, but they almost seem to apologise for doing so: narrow, serpentine, with sporadic guardrails overhanging vertiginous drops. This remoteness has shaped the character of the people — reserved, proud, self-sufficient — and has preserved a human and natural ecosystem that elsewhere disappeared decades ago. It is not isolation as a limitation, but as a shield.

Sardinian banditry and its pastoral roots

Ussassai and its surroundings bear in their collective memory the history of Ogliastran banditry, a complex phenomenon that in the 19th and 20th centuries ran through these mountains like an underground current. It was not simple criminality: it was often a response to feudal injustices, conflicts between shepherds and landowners, age-old codes of honour that the Italian state struggled to understand. The shepherds of Ussassai knew every hidden path, every cave, every impassable pass. That thorough knowledge of the land was survival — and at times, for some, also a refuge from the law.

Primary forests and unspoilt nature

The municipal territory of Ussassai is covered for the most part by forests of holm oak, strawberry tree, downy oak and yew — some of the most intact on the island. In these woods live the Sardinian deer, wild boar, stone marten and raptors such as the short-toed snake eagle and the northern goshawk. The gorges that score the landscape, carved over millennia by seasonal streams, create humid microclimates where ferns, mosses and rare plants grow. The Gennargentu looms to the north like a granite cathedral. To walk these paths is to move through a world that has remained essentially unchanged for centuries.

Pastoral life still alive

In Ussassai, shepherding is not folklore: it is still a living economy. Shepherds drive their flocks up to the high plateaus in summer and bring them back down to the valleys in winter, following transhumance routes their ancestors repeated identically. Pecorino, fresh cheese, steaming ricotta: here they are still made as they have always been made, with raw milk and expert hands. Patron saint's feasts and the moments of the agro-pastoral calendar — shearing, communal milking, the slaughter of the pig — still mark the rhythm of the village with a cadence the modern world has almost everywhere forgotten.

This is not a beach in the traditional sense, but one of the most spectacular river gorges in Ogliastra. Rocky walls that narrow to just a few metres, crystal-clear water flowing between smoothed boulders, natural pools perfect for swimming in summer. A place of rare wild beauty, accessible only on foot along paths that require care and sturdy footwear.

The Rio Flumineddu crosses the territory of Ussassai, forming a series of natural pools set between the rocks and surrounded by lush vegetation. In summer the water is cool and clear, perfect for refreshing yourself after long walks. Access requires a short hike along an unmarked path: it is worth asking the village residents for directions.

Feast of Saint George the Martyr

The patron saint of Ussassai is celebrated with a traditional procession, solemn mass and moments of communal sharing. The feast retains a gathered, genuine character, far from spectacle: it is one of those moments when the village comes together around its roots with simplicity and depth.

Su Trataliu — Agro-pastoral Celebrations

During the summer months the village organises events to showcase its pastoral traditions: demonstrations of artisan cheese-making, tastings of local products and guided walks through the forests with local shepherds. A rare opportunity to connect with an ancient and still authentic way of life.

Autumn (October–November)

Festival of Mushrooms and Forest Produce

Autumn transforms the forests of Ussassai into a natural larder: porcini mushrooms, chestnuts, acorns for the pigs. The autumn festival celebrates this atavistic bond with the forest through tastings, artisan markets and mycological excursions led by local experts.
