A bishop's seat since 1824, the town preserves a collected and dignified atmosphere that mirrors the character of its people: reserved, tenacious, and deeply rooted in their own traditions. The historic centre unfolds around the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maddalena, with stone alleyways and noble palaces that tell centuries of history. From the panoramic terraces, on clear days, the gaze stretches as far as the Tyrrhenian Sea, offering views of rare beauty that bring mountains and sea together in a unique embrace.
Lanusei is also a city of knowledge and culture: it hosts the Cagliari Astronomical Observatory (a branch facility), which exploits the purity of the Ogliastra sky to study distant stars, far from the glow of civilisation. Around the town stretch ancient forests such as the Seleni Wood, home to centuries-old holm oaks and monumental cork oaks, and the green promontory of Monte Armidda, which offers trails immersed in the wildest nature. With around 5,200 inhabitants, Lanusei is not only a service hub — it hosts the only hospital in the entire Ogliastra area — but is a privileged gateway to the treasures of one of the most unspoilt and least-known provinces of Sardinia.
The Lanusei Astronomical Observatory, a branch of the Cagliari Astronomical Observatory (INAF), was chosen precisely for the exceptional quality of its night sky. Far from the light pollution of the coasts, at nearly 600 metres altitude, the starry horizon of Lanusei is among the clearest in all of eastern Sardinia. On some summer nights it is possible to see the Milky Way with the naked eye.
The Diocese of Lanusei was established in 1824 by Pope Leo XII, driven by the territorial reforms of the post-Napoleonic period. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Maddalena thus became the seat of a bishop, conferring on the small mountain town a most respectable ecclesiastical rank that still defines its identity and prestige throughout the entire Ogliastra region.
The Cherry Festival, held every year between May and June, celebrates one of the territory's most beloved products. Thanks to the mountain microclimate — cold winters and mild summers — the cherries of Lanusei develop a particular sweetness and texture, sought after in markets throughout Sardinia. The festival draws visitors from every corner of the island and transforms into a celebration of music, traditional dances, and authentic flavours.
The Seleni Wood, a few kilometres from the centre of Lanusei, is one of the most evocative corners of inland Ogliastra. Within it grow centuries-old holm oaks and cork oaks, some with trunk circumferences exceeding three metres. The wood has always been considered a place of silence and contemplation, frequented in the past by hermits and shepherds. Today it is an ideal destination for hikers and lovers of the most authentic nature.
Mountains, forests and trails to explore

Monte Armidda overlooks Lanusei with its forests of conifers and broadleaf trees. The main trail, well marked, passes through fragrant pine groves and panoramic clearings offering a spectacular view over Ogliastra and, on clear days, as far as the Gulf of Arbatax. In spring the undergrowth fills with wild orchids and anemones.

A loop trail winding among the plant giants of the Seleni Wood. The path, partly on forest track, leads to the discovery of monumental holm oaks and exceptionally rich flora. The atmosphere is that of a primordial, almost fairy-tale forest: ideal for families and for those seeking a restorative walk far from the chaos.

From the natural viewpoint near Lanusei, at altitude, one of Ogliastra's most breathtaking panoramas unfolds: on one side the peaks of the Gennargentu covered in forests, on the other the Tyrrhenian coast with the unmistakable silhouette of the Arbatax Rock. At sunset the colours are extraordinary. Reachable by car too, with a short final walk.

The narrow-gauge railway of the Green Train skirts the territory of Lanusei, offering one of Sardinia's most beautiful scenic journeys. The stretch towards Gairo crosses valleys, stone bridges, and rural landscapes of extraordinary beauty. Operating in summer, it is a unique experience for families and tourists eager to discover the Ogliastra hinterland.
Lanusei's most beloved celebration marks the ripening of the prized local cherries with tastings, farmers' markets, folk music, and traditional costumed dances. Producers open their orchards and local families prepare traditional cherry-based sweets. An unmissable event that draws visitors from all over Sardinia.
The patron saint of the city is celebrated with a solemn procession from the cathedral through the streets of the historic centre, accompanied by launeddas and the chants of the Sardinian religious tradition. The evening concludes with fireworks and a town fair that fills the squares and streets until late at night.
In collaboration with INAF, the Lanusei Astronomical Observatory opens its doors to the public for evenings of sky observation with professional telescopes. Astronomers and science communicators guide visitors in the discovery of planets, nebulae, and star clusters, making full use of the extraordinary transparency of the Ogliastra sky.
As part of the regional circuit 'Autumn in Barbagia', Lanusei opens its historic courtyards and ancient homes to visitors, offering tastings of local products: pecorino cheeses, strawberry-tree honey, culurgiones, and artisan myrtle liqueur. Local craftspeople and artists display their works, bringing the most hidden corners of the village back to life.
