Monte Ferru in Cardedu: Hiking Between Holm Oak Forests and Red Rocks by the Sea
Hiking guide to Monte Ferru in Cardedu. A loop itinerary among ancient watchtowers, shepherds' coiles, and the red shingle marina of Coccorocci.
The volcanic massif of Monte Ferru rises majestically over the coast of Cardedu, offering one of the wildest and most panoramic treks in southern Ogliastra. Characterized by a unique geology, where red volcanic porphyry clashes with the dark green of holm oak forests, this itinerary leads hikers to discover ancient Spanish lookouts and ancestral pastures overlooking the cliffs of Coccorocci.
Spanish Towers and Coiles: The History of Monte Ferru The very name of the mountain betrays the iron-like nature of its volcanic rocks, which at sunset light up with warm, reddish hues. Historically, this mountain represented an important area for wild grazing and a strategic outpost for spotting pirate ships arriving from North Africa.
Along the way, you will encounter the ruins of the Monte Ferru Tower, a coastal lookout built at the end of the 16th century to protect the marina below. Near the ridges, you will also find the old "coiles" (traditional Sardinian folds), pastoral huts built with a solid stone base and a conical roof made of interwoven juniper branches, testifying to the harsh life of Ogliastra transhumance.
The Loop Trail: From the Scrub to the Panoramic Ridges The itinerary starts from the coastal area of Coccorocci, famous for its beach of red porphyry pebbles polished by the waves. The path enters a shaded gorge ascending along the bed of a seasonal torrent, surrounded by a lush scrub of holm oaks, strawberry trees, and heather.
As you gain altitude, the vegetation thins out, leaving room for spectacular porphyritic outcrops. Once you reach the summit ridge, the view opens up 360 degrees: the gaze ranges from the rugged spires of the Supramonte to the north, down to the long sandy beaches of Cardedu and Tertenia to the south.
