The Secrets
of Talana

4 curiosities and stories

01

The forest of thousand-year-old holm oaks

Around Talana stretch forests of holm oak — the evergreen oak native to the Mediterranean — that reach extraordinary ages, with some estimated at over a thousand years. These silent giants form a continuous canopy that filters the light and creates unique microclimates, sheltering mouflons, stone martens and birds of prey. Walking among these enormous trees is an almost mystical experience: the twisted trunks covered in lichens look like natural sculptures, witnesses of a wild and primordial Sardinia that has never surrendered to modernity.

02

The Blue Zone and longevity

Talana is part of the celebrated Ogliastran Blue Zone, the territory that has the highest percentage of male centenarians in the world. Researchers have long investigated the reasons for this extraordinary longevity: a diet based on pane carasau, pecorino cheeses, legumes and Cannonau wine; an active life filled with daily walks through the forests; deep family and community bonds; low levels of stress. The elderly of Talana do not know the concept of retirement: they remain active, useful and respected well into old age.

03

Fiore Sardo and the art of cheese-making

The cheese-making tradition of Talana revolves around Fiore Sardo DOP, the oldest cheese in Sardinia, produced exclusively from raw sheep's milk. Here the shepherds still prepare it using traditional methods: lamb or kid rennet, hand-pressing, smoking in characteristic stone rooms. The result is a cheese with a complex aromatic profile — herbaceous, piquant, lightly smoked — that tells the story of the land in every bite. Visiting a farmstead during cheese-making is one of the privileges reserved for slow and curious travellers.

04

Goat herding and transhumance

Talana has been a village of shepherds for centuries, and the Ogliastran goat is still today the symbol animal of this community. The flocks move seasonally between higher altitudes in summer and milder valleys in winter, following ancient routes called trattoi — true green corridors through the forests. The shepherds know every stone, every spring, every shelter on the mountain. This deep bond with the land has generated an extraordinarily rich local lexicon and a system of ecological knowledge passed down orally that no book has ever fully captured.
