The Ghost Villages of Ogliastra: Osini Vecchio and Gairo Vecchio

The story of the abandoned villages of Osini and Gairo, destroyed by the 1951 flood. How to visit them, what to see and the legends that surround them.

On the night of 18–19 November 1951, a devastating flood struck Ogliastra. Within a matter of hours, landslides and mudslides rendered two entire villages uninhabitable: Osini and Gairo. Their inhabitants were evacuated and rebuilt their lives elsewhere, leaving behind two ghost villages that time and nature have transformed into places of haunting beauty.

Osini Vecchio

The Night of the Flood

Osini was a small village of shepherds perched at 640 metres, at the foot of the limestone tacchi. On the night of 18 November 1951, torrential rain triggered a landslide that slid towards the village. Houses began to creak, foundations gave way. Miraculously, no one died: the residents were evacuated in time.

What You See Today

Osini Vecchio is one of the most evocative abandoned villages in Italy. The stone houses are still standing, their roofs collapsed and vegetation pushing through the walls. You walk along silent streets where children once played. The church is still recognisable, its altar open to the sky.

How to visit: From the new Osini (1 km on foot). No entrance fee. Watch out for unstable structures — do not enter any dangerous buildings.

La Scala di San Giorgio

A short walk from the ghost village is the Scala di San Giorgio, one of the most spectacular natural passages in Sardinia. A gap between two enormous limestone tacchi that opens like a portal between two worlds. The light filtering between the 100-metre rock walls creates an almost sacred atmosphere.

Gairo: The Triple Village

Three Villages in One

Gairo is a unique case in Italy: it has been rebuilt twice. After the 1951 flood, the inhabitants moved to Gairo Taquisara, higher up. There is also Gairo Sant'Elena, the coastal hamlet with natural thermal springs. Three Gairos, three souls, one single identity.

Gairo Vecchio

Unlike Osini, Gairo Vecchio is a larger, more complex settlement. The streets are still paved, the house facades retain traces of coloured plaster. The parish church, its bell tower still intact, commands a panorama of limestone tacchi. It is a place that inspires respect and quiet reflection.

The Santa Maria Thermal Springs

In the coastal hamlet of Gairo Sant'Elena, natural thermal springs emerge from the rock at 38°C, rich in minerals. It is one of the few natural thermal facilities on the eastern coast of Sardinia, known since Roman times.

Why Visit Them

The ghost villages of Ogliastra are not tourist attractions in the traditional sense. They are places of memory, where silence tells stories more powerful than any guidebook. Visiting them means confronting the fragility of human presence in the face of the force of nature.

Best time to visit: Spring and autumn, when the light is soft and the vegetation creates a poetic contrast with the ruins.

A note on respect: These are sacred places for the communities of Osini and Gairo. Do not leave rubbish, do not take away stones or objects, do not be noisy.
