Cala Birìola: The Beach Between the Holm Oak Forest and the Sea
Wild beach nestled between limestone cliffs and centuries-old holm oak forest. Technical but fascinating descent to crystal-clear waters and the old charcoal workers' jetty.
Cala Birìola: The Beach Between the Holm Oak Forest and the Sea
Cala Birìola is not an improvised tourist destination. It is a wild beach, born from the violent meeting of white limestone rock and the blue of the Gulf of Orosei, where the intense scent of wet holm oak mingles with salt spray. Reaching it means giving up comfort: no kiosks, showers, or sun loungers. There is only rock, forest, and silence broken by the mistral wind.
The History of the Tuscan Charcoal Workers and the Old Jetty
In the 19th century, when the holm oak forest was the economic backbone of Sardinia, Tuscan charcoal workers descended from the Supramonte to collect wood and produce charcoal. Cala Birìola was a natural harbour: here they unloaded sacks of charcoal using a rudimentary wooden jetty, now deteriorated but still visible, rising from the water like an industrial relic.
Locals say that on nights before the full moon, you can still hear the sound of pickaxes on rock and smell the charcoal kiln—a legend evoking an era when Cala Birìola pulsed with commerce and manual labour.

What to Do at Cala Birìola
Swimming and Snorkelling
Crystal-clear waters (visibility up to 15 metres) with temperatures of 20–22°C even in late summer. The seabed is a mix of sand and rock, with rocky passages near the beach edges—perfect for spotting sea bream and white sea bream. The north tip of the beach (towards the jetty) hides the richest marine life (sea urchins, starfish, red algae).
Photography
The contrast between white limestone, blue sea and dark holm oak is extraordinary. Best light: dawn (06:00–07:30) when the low sun highlights rock textures; second best: late afternoon (18:00–19:30) when oak shadows draw a sharp line across the sunlit beach.
Where to Eat: Coccoi Prena Picnic
There is no restaurant at Cala Birìola. Bring your own food—we recommend picking up a Coccoi Prena (a warm flatbread) from a bakery in Baunei before heading down: pastry dough stuffed with potatoes, fresh mint and salted pecorino, wood-fired. Perfect for the beach.
Recommended Picnic Menu:
- Coccoi Prena (savoury flatbread) — from Baunei bakery
- Semi-aged Pecorino from Villagrande Strisaili
- Sun-dried tomatoes in oil
- Cold water + chilled Vermentino in a thermal bag
- Dried fruit: almonds and dried apricots

The Magic of the Old Jetty at Sunset
In the late afternoon, when the light is low and the holm oak forest casts long shadows, the old deteriorated wooden jetty emerges as a monument to the industrial past. The Tuscan charcoal workers could never have imagined their jetty would captivate modern travellers three centuries later.
Final tips:
- Start the trek by 08:30 to avoid the overhead sun.
- Descend slowly on the rocky section—take your time.
- Check the weather forecast: a sudden squall can turn the trail into a slippery trap.
- Always carry an emergency whistle and a torch (in case of delay at sunset).
