Hiking Cala Goloritzé (Sardinia): Tickets, App & Trail Guide
Planning to hike Cala Goloritzé in Sardinia? Here is your complete guide to the trail, required entry tickets, app booking, and 2026 regulations.
Cala Goloritzé is one of the most brilliant and protected gems of the Mediterranean. Declared a Natural Monument of the Sardinia Region in 1993 and an Italian National Monument in 1995, this cove is famous worldwide for the Aguglia of Monte Caroddi, a majestic limestone needle rising 148 metres straight out of the turquoise sea, attracting climbers and hikers from every continent. In order to preserve this pristine beauty from the impact of mass tourism, the Municipality of Baunei has introduced strict access rules and a daily visitor cap. Here is everything you need to know to plan your visit.
How to Get There: The Hike from Su Porteddu
The most authentic and ecological way to reach Cala Goloritzé is on foot. The trail, known as CAI 702, starts from the equipped car park at Su Porteddu, on the Golgo plateau in the territory of Baunei.
- Starting Point: Su Porteddu car park, Golgo Plateau (Baunei)
- Technical Difficulty: E (Hiking). It does not require climbing equipment but demands good physical fitness
- Elevation Gain/Loss: 470 metres (descending on the way there, climbing on the way back)
- Trail Length: Approximately 3.5 km each way
- Hiking Time: 1 hour and 15 minutes descending, about 1 hour and 45 minutes for the return climb
The trail begins with a short ascent to a scenic saddle and then descends with regular slopes inside Bacu Caroddi. You will walk in the shade of ancient holm oaks, between spectacular limestone walls and old stone and juniper shepherd huts. The last section offers unforgettable views of the Aguglia before descending to the beach via wooden stairs.
Safety and Equipment Tips
Although the path is well marked, it should not be underestimated. The elevation gain and the summer heat can make the return climb very strenuous.
- Mandatory Footwear: Hiking shoes with gripped soles are required. It is strictly forbidden and dangerous to tackle the trail in flip-flops, sandals, or smooth running shoes
- Water Supply: Bring at least 2 litres of water per person. There are no drinking water sources or refreshment points on the beach or along the trail
- Light Snack: To recharge your energy without feeling heavy, we recommend a typical local snack of pane carasau and fresh goat cheese or casu axedu, enjoyed under the shade of holm oaks near the beach
- Starting Time: In summer, start early in the morning (by 8:00 AM) to avoid doing the return climb during the hottest hours of the afternoon
Access Regulations and Booking
To protect the beach and the biodiversity of the gulf, access is limited to a maximum of 250 visitors per day.
- Mandatory Booking: You must book your place using the official Heart of Sardinia app
- Booking Window: Bookings can be made starting from 72 hours before the day of your visit
- Eco-tax Contribution: To access the beach, there is a ticket of 6 euros per person (free for Baunei residents)
- Check Point Hours: The check point at the start of the trail at Su Porteddu is active from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM
- No Boat Landing: Since 2007, any motorboat landing is forbidden within 300 metres of the shore. You cannot be dropped off directly on the beach by boat
Protecting the Environment and Fines
The beach is composed of tiny white pebbles polished by time. It is strictly forbidden to collect or remove pebbles, sand, or shells. Violators are punished with very heavy fines. Also, remember that pets are not allowed and that every visitor must carry back all of their own rubbish. Let's respect this paradise to leave it untouched for future generations.
