Cea Beach: The Red Rocks and the Fine Sand of Ogliastra
Guide to Cea Beach between Tortolì and Bari Sardo: the famous red porphyry sea stacks (Is Scoglius Arrubius), snorkeling, services and how to get there.
Cea Beach: The Red Rocks and the Fine Sand of Ogliastra
Cea Beach is one of the most photographed gems of Ogliastra. Situated on the border between the territories of Tortolì and Bari Sardo, it features a long stretch of fine white sand, lapped by shallow and incredibly transparent waters. The unique characteristic that makes this place unmistakable is the presence of two majestic red porphyry sea stacks, known as "Is Scoglius Arrubius", which rise about three hundred meters from the shore.
The Legend of Is Scoglius Arrubius
The Sardinian name "Is Scoglius Arrubius" literally translates to "the red rocks". Local fishermen tell that these stone giants are ancient guardians placed to protect the bay. The stacks are made of red porphyry, a volcanic rock with a warm, changing color that takes on spectacular hues at sunrise and sunset.
Outdoor Activities and Snorkeling
For the active visitor, Cea offers wonderful opportunities:
- Swim to the Sea Stacks: The distance of about 300 meters from the shore is a classic challenge for intermediate swimmers. Once reached, you can rest on the flat rocks.
- Snorkeling: The seabed around the stacks is rich in rocky crevices and caves hosting octopuses, sea bream, and starfish.
Flavors on the Beach: A Glass of Vermentino
After a refreshing swim, the beach kiosks offer the best of local flavors. We recommend enjoying a glass of chilled Vermentino di Sardegna DOC, fresh and savory, perfect for accompanying small seafood snacks or a platter of local pecorino cheese in the shade of the wooden verandas.
