Gorropu Gorge and Tiscali Village: An Epic Hike Between Ogliastra and Barbagia

On the border between Ogliastra and Barbagia lie two of the most extraordinary places in Sardinia — and perhaps in all of Europe. The Gorropu Gorge, the deepest canyon in Italy, and the nuragic village of Tiscali, hidden inside a hollow mountain. Two hikes that alone are worth the trip to Sardinia.

The Gorropu Gorge

What It Is

The Gorropu Gorge is a canyon roughly 1.5 km long, carved by the Rio Flumineddu through the dolomitic limestone of the Supramonte. Its walls reach 500 metres in height at their tallest, while at the narrowest points the two walls are just 4–5 metres apart. It is the deepest canyon in Italy and one of the deepest in Europe — earning it the nickname "the Grand Canyon of Europe".

Light barely penetrates the floor of the gorge, where the temperature remains constantly cool even in high summer. The silence is absolute. The effect is that of standing inside a natural cathedral.

How to Get There

Main trail (from Ponte Sa Barva):
- Starting point: Ponte Sa Barva, accessible by car from Dorgali (towards Passo Silana)
- Distance: 7 km return
- Elevation change: 350m descent (and re-ascent on return)
- Time: 3–4 hours return
- Difficulty: E/EE (Experienced Hikers)

The trail descends through a holm oak forest, follows the dry bed of the river and reaches the entrance to the gorge. The descent is manageable; the climb back up in the heat requires good fitness.

Trail from S'Arena (Urzulei):
- Starting point: Loc. S'Arena, Urzulei (Ogliastra)
- Distance: 10 km return
- Time: 5–6 hours return
- Difficulty: EE

A longer but less-frequented trail. It starts on the Ogliastra side of the Supramonte and crosses wilder terrain.

What You Will See

Zone 1 (open access): The entrance to the gorge, where the walls begin to close in. Enormous boulders on the floor, filtered light, cliff-dwelling vegetation.

Zone 2 (with a guide): The narrowest and deepest section. Requires scrambling over boulders, short climbs and a good sense of direction. A guide is strongly recommended (not by regulation, but for safety).

Zone 3 (experts only): The far end of the gorge, accessible only with canyoning equipment. Vertical walls, water passages, abseil descents.

The Village of Tiscali

The Mystery of the Hollow Mountain

Tiscali is a nuragic village hidden inside a doline (a karst sinkhole) at the summit of Monte Tiscali, on the border between Oliena, Dorgali and the Supramonte of Urzulei. Its uniqueness is unparalleled in the world: an entire human settlement built inside a hollow mountain, sheltered by the natural roof of the limestone vault above.

The village was probably inhabited as a refuge by the last nuragic resisters against Roman colonisation (3rd–2nd century BC). Its position was virtually impregnable: the only access is a narrow gap in the rock, invisible from outside.

How to Get There

Trail from Valle di Lanaitto (Oliena):
- Starting point: Valle di Lanaitto (drive to the car park)
- Distance: 7 km return
- Elevation change: 400m
- Time: 4–5 hours return
- Difficulty: EE (Experienced Hikers)

The trail climbs through holm oak forest before ascending the limestone face on exposed sections. The final stretch descends into the doline through a gap in the rock. The "revelation" effect — entering the hollow and seeing the village ruins — is unforgettable.

Trail from Su Gologone:
- A longer variant (5 hours return) with a less steep approach.

What You Will See

Inside the doline (roughly 100m in diameter) you will find the remains of:
- Circular huts with stone walls still clearly visible
- Rectangular structures from a later period
- Defensive walls at the entrance to the cavity
- The natural roof of the limestone vault, partially collapsed, creating a spectacular play of light

The site is protected: nothing may be touched or moved.

Entry and Guides

Combining Both Hikes

Day 1: Gorropu - Early morning: depart from Ponte Sa Barva - Hike into the gorge (3–4 hours) - Packed lunch - Afternoon: return and relax

Day 2: Tiscali - Morning: depart from Valle di Lanaitto - Hike to the village (4–5 hours) - Lunch: agriturismo in Valle di Lanaitto - Afternoon: visit the Su Gologone spring

Recommended Base Urzulei (Ogliastra) or Dorgali (Barbagia) — both 20–30 minutes from the trail starting points. Urzulei is smaller and more authentic; Dorgali has more facilities.

Equipment

• Hiking boots with Vibram soles (limestone is slippery!)
• Minimum 2 litres of water (3 in summer)
• Sun hat and sunscreen
• Packed lunch
• Head torch (useful inside the Tiscali doline)
• Trekking poles (recommended for the descent to Gorropu)

When to Go

• April–June: Ideal. Mild temperatures, long daylight hours, lush vegetation
• September–October: Excellent. Less heat, autumn colours
• July–August: Very hot (35–40°C). Set off at dawn
• Winter: Trails are passable but days are short. Gorropu may have water in the riverbed (more atmospheric but more demanding)

One Last Thought

Gorropu and Tiscali are not "normal" hikes. They are experiences that change the way you see the world. Standing at the bottom of a canyon with 500 metres of rock overhead, or entering a hollow mountain where 2,000 years ago an entire people hid from the Romans — these are the things you remember for the rest of your life.
