The Land Reclamation of Cardedu after 1951

The coastal plain of Cardedu, where Foddini beach is located, has a recent history linked to the rebirth of the area. Until the mid-20th century, this area was mostly marshy. Following the catastrophic 1951 landslide and flood that destroyed the mountain village of Gairo Vecchio, the displaced population was partly resettled in the newly created coastal hamlet of Cardedu. A major land reclamation project was launched, draining the coastal swamps and planting the pine forests behind the dunes, turning the area into a fertile land and a wonderful holiday destination.
