Gorropu Gorge Trekking: Exploring Europe's Deepest Canyon

Complete guide to trekking the Gorropu Gorge from Genna Silana Pass: trails, difficulty, legends, tickets, and jeep shuttles in Ogliastra.

The Gorropu Gorge is a wonder of nature, a majestic canyon carved by the Rio Flumineddu that separates the Supramonte of Urzulei from that of Dorgali. Its vertical limestone walls, reaching heights of 500 meters, make it the deepest canyon in Europe. A primordial and fascinating place, home to rare botanical species and ancient legends.

Legends of the Canyon: Sa Tana de is Nebulas

For centuries, the Gorropu Gorge was feared and avoided by local populations. It was said that legendary creatures lived in the shadows of its towering walls. The most famous legend speaks of "Sa Tana de is Nebulas" (the lair of the mists), a deep cleft from which the clouds covering the Supramonte were generated. Other stories tell of the "Giants," ancient beings who guarded the passage to protect the earth's treasures. From a naturalistic perspective, the gorge hosts a species unique in the world: the Aquilegia nugorensis, an extremely rare flower that grows only on the damp, shaded walls of the canyon.

How to Get There: Trekking from Genna Silana Pass

The most famous and spectacular route starts from Genna Silana Pass on the SS 125 Orientale Sarda (km 183), in the territory of Urzulei.

  • Difficulty: E (Hikers) for the access trail; EE (Experienced Hikers) inside the canyon.
  • Elevation change: 650 meters downhill (on the way there) and the same uphill (on the way back).
  • Hiking time: 2 hours for the descent, 3 hours for the ascent.
  • Length: About 8 km (round trip).

The trail descends steeply but is well-trodden through a forest of holm oaks and centenarian strawberry trees. During the descent, you enjoy breathtaking views of the canyon and the limestone walls drawing closer.

Inside the Canyon: The Three Paths (Green, Yellow, and Red)

Once at the bottom of the gorge, entry to the protected area requires a ticket. The route inside the canyon is divided into three sectors of increasing difficulty:

  • Green Path: Easy and suitable for everyone. You walk among huge boulders polished by the water.
  • Yellow Path: Medium difficulty. Requires agility and using your hands to overcome larger boulders.
  • Red Path: Reserved for experienced hikers with climbing equipment. The walls narrow, and the route requires technical climbing moves.
