Lanusei: The City of Pure Air and Mount Armidda

Built on a natural amphitheater overlooking the valley and looking towards the sea, Lanusei is a mountain village in Ogliastra situated at an altitude of about 590 meters. Famous historically as a health and holiday resort, the town enjoys a breezy position where the cool currents of Gennargentu converge, gifting it with exceptionally pure and crisp air. Seat of the Diocese and a historic administrative center, Lanusei combines the solemnity of its religious institutions with the natural and archaeological wonders that surround it.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Maddalena and the Historic Center

The heart of Lanusei unfolds along steep streets and welcoming squares winding around the majestic Cathedral of Santa Maria Maddalena. Originally built in the 16th century and later expanded in neoclassical style between the 19th and 20th centuries, the cathedral represents the spiritual hub of the entire Ogliastra diocese. Inside, it houses valuable paintings and marble decorations that testify to the historic importance of the town.

Strolling along the main street and slipping into the characteristic stone alleys, one breathes the atmosphere of a proud mountain center. Elegant 19th-century historic palaces alternate with breathtaking panoramic views that, on the clearest days, allow the gaze to stretch as far as the Gulf of Arbatax.

The "Ferdinand Giordano" Astronomical Observatory on Mount Armidda

At about 1100 meters above sea level, the Mount Armidda Astronomical Observatory stands out on the summit of the mount, named after the local scientist Ferdinand Giordano. This facility represents one of the scientific excellences of Sardinia and Italy, positioned in an area virtually free of light pollution.

The observatory houses state-of-the-art telescopes and is regularly open to the public for guided observation evenings of the celestial vault. Walking on the summit of the mountain at sunset and waiting for darkness to observe constellations, planets, and nebulae is an unforgettable sensory experience, favored by the solemn silence of the mountain.

Trekking and Archaeology: The Archaeological Park of the Selene Wood

For lovers of outdoor walks and ancient history, the Selene Wood (Bosco di Selene) is a mandatory stop. This dense forest of secular holm oaks extends over a cool and shaded granite plateau, ideal for seeking shelter from the summer heat.

Inside the forest is an important archaeological area that includes:
- The Gennacili Nuraghe: built on a dominant granite rocky spur to control the surrounding territory.
- Two Giants' Tombs (Tombe dei Giganti): Bronze Age funerary monuments in excellent condition, built with large slabs of local granite and oriented according to astronomical alignments.

The trails crossing the park are well-marked and also suitable for families with children, offering equipped picnic areas and cool mountain springs to refresh.

Mountain Gastronomy: Minestra de Erbas

The food and wine tradition of Lanusei is closely linked to the fruits of the land and the mountain agro-pastoral culture. The most characteristic and identity-defining dish is Minestra de Erbas (wild herb soup).

This is a poor but nutrient-rich recipe, prepared by gathering wild herbs that grow on the surrounding hills and Heels (Tacchi), such as wild fennel, chicory, borage, dandelion, and wild chard. The herbs are slowly cooked in a broth enriched with savory lard and wet pistoccu bread, and finally enhanced with a local acid curd (casu axedu) or grated aged pecorino. It is a warm and comforting dish, perfect when paired with a structured glass of Cannonau from Ogliastra.
