Porto Frailis: The Sheltered Bay of Tortolì

Porto Frailis is one of the most popular coves on the Tortolì coast. Characterized by a perfect horseshoe shape, this fine sand bay is famous for being naturally protected from most winds, especially the mistral. Its shallow, crystal-clear waters slope gently, making it the ideal destination for families with children and anyone seeking a day of pure relaxation.

The Spanish Tower of San Gemiliano and the Saracens

Dominating the bay, on the rocky headland to the north, stands the majestic San Gemiliano Tower. Built in the 17th century during Spanish rule, this tower was part of Sardinia's complex coastal defense system.

Its strategic position allowed watchmen to spot Saracen pirate ships attempting raids along the Ogliastra coast well in advance. In case of danger, the guards lit large signal fires to alert the inland populations. Today, the tower can be reached via a short walk and is one of the most scenic viewpoints in the area.

Coastal Walk and Outdoor Activities

For outdoor enthusiasts, Porto Frailis offers an ideal starting point for easy exploration:

  • Walk to the Tower: A path winds from the beach up the promontory to the San Gemiliano Tower. The walk takes about 15 minutes and is suitable for everyone.
  • Snorkeling: The cliffs bounding the bay to the north and south are rich in posidonia and marine life, ideal for snorkeling enthusiasts.

Where to Eat: Mixed Fried Fish from the Lagoon

After a day at the beach, a gastronomic stop is a must. The nearby Tortolì Lagoon is famous for its excellent fish production. At the local cooperative or restaurants near the beach, you can taste an exceptional mixed fried fish of local catch, freshly caught and cooked according to the maritime traditions of Tortolì.
