Scala di San Giorgio in Osini: The Miracle in the Rock

Discover the Scala di San Giorgio in Osini: a monumental rocky gorge blending legend, faith, and a breathtaking hiking trail on the Tacchi of Ogliastra.

The Scala di San Giorgio in Osini is a true geological and spiritual miracle located in the heart of the Barbagia di Seulo and Ogliastra. This extremely narrow rocky gorge slips between monumental limestone walls that rise vertically into the sky for over a hundred meters. A place steeped in mysticism and legend, it represents one of the most important natural and cultural attractions of the Tacchi region.

The Miracle of Bishop Saint George

The most famous and fascinating legend associated with this place features Saint George, Bishop of Suelli, who lived around the year 1000. It is said that the Saint, traveling to evangelize the innermost and most rugged areas of Ogliastra, found himself in front of the insurmountable rocky wall of the Tacchi of Osini. Unable to proceed, he gathered in prayer.

At the end of his prayer, the Saint touched the rock: miraculously, the mountain split in two, opening a narrow and steep passage that allowed him to overcome the obstacle and continue his mission. Since then, that monumental split has been known as "La Scala di San Giorgio" (Saint George's Stairway), representing a gateway rich in sacredness and archaic charm.

The Hike and the Ascent on Iron Steps

Today, the Scala di San Giorgio is a protected natural monument, easily accessible and the starting point for spectacular treks on the surrounding Tacchi.

The most exciting experience is walking through the gorge and climbing the iron steps positioned on one of the rock faces. This metal staircase, while requiring caution and a head for heights, leads in a few minutes to an exceptional 360-degree panoramic viewpoint. From here, the view spans the new village of Osini Nuovo, the ruins of Osini Vecchio (abandoned after the 1951 flood), and the entire Pardu Valley.

  • Difficulty: T (Tourist) for the gorge, E (Hiker) for the panoramic climb.
  • Elevation change: 80 meters.
  • Climbing time: 15 minutes.
  • Equipment: Shoes with good grip, water.

Local Flavors: Coccoi de cibudda

After the climb, the best way to refresh in Osini is to taste the "Coccoi de cibudda". This is a traditional Ogliastra flatbread made with onions and fresh salted cheese ("sa fitta"), baked until it is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. A savory travel snack perfect for hikers.
