The Historic Path of the Trenino Verde: Trekking along the Railway Tracks

A unique trek along the service paths of the historic Trenino Verde railway between Seui and Lanusei. Itinerary among iron bridges and tunnels.

The Trenino Verde of Sardinia represents one of the most spectacular historic railway lines in Europe. Walking along the service paths next to the narrow-gauge tracks, particularly in the wild section between Seui and Lanusei, offers an experience of industrial archaeology and immersion in nature with no equals.

The Epoch of the Gennargentu Mountain Railway

Designed at the end of the nineteenth century to connect the mining areas and the most isolated inland villages with the coast, the railway challenges the slopes and gorges of the Gennargentu with a series of engineering masterpieces. Iron bridges suspended in the air, tunnels carved with pickaxes in the granite rock, and stations lost among the oak trees testify to the hard work of the laborers of the time.

The hiking trail allows you to retrace these historic sections on foot, offering unique views that are not visible from asphalted roads, in a silence broken only by the rustling of the wind through the leaves.

The Itinerary: Among Iron Bridges and Historic Tunnels

The path develops alongside the railway line, using old service mule tracks and patrol paths. It crosses steep valleys and untouched wooded sections. One of the most spectacular points of the itinerary is the passage near the large metal bridge over the Rio San Girolamo, an audacious late 19th-century structure suspended dozens of meters high.

During the trek, you also pass through some historic railway tunnels carved into the rock. The walk, while not presenting prohibitive slopes, requires attention due to the unstable gravel ground along the tracks.

Technical Details of the Itinerary

  • Difficulty: E (Hiking)
  • Walking time: 4 hours total (one way)

The Railway Worker's Snack: Pecorino, Sausage, and Cannonau

The packed lunch for hikers along the tracks recalls the rustic snack of the old Sardinian railway workers: crispy carasau bread, dry wild boar sausage sliced with a knife, and chunks of mature pecorino cheese with a strong flavor. All accompanied by a glass of red Cannonau wine, robust and intense, perfect for providing warmth and invigorating the body after long hours of walking.
