The Trail to Cala Luna from Baunei: The Variant via Codula Elune

Complete guide to the trek to Cala Luna from Baunei through Codula Elune. A journey among ancient sheepfolds, wild canyons, and paradise beaches.

The trail leading to the famous beach of Cala Luna starting from the Golgo plateau in Baunei, through the Codula Elune, is one of the most fascinating and wild hiking itineraries in all of Sardinia. This variant combines the majesty of the karstic inland with the pristine beauty of the Ogliastra coast.

The Codula and Ancient Sheepfolds

The "codula" is the Sardinian term for a deep gorge or an ancient riverbed, carved over millennia by water flowing from the mountains to the sea. Codula Elune (or Codula di Luna) looks like an impressive canyon, flanked by high limestone walls covered with dense Mediterranean scrub of junipers and wild oleanders.

Along the way, you will encounter several historic sheepfolds ("coiles"), ancient shelters made of stone and juniper trunks built by Baunei shepherds. These complexes bear witness to a hard pastoral life lived in total isolation and in perfect harmony with a rugged and unforgiving territory.

The Route: Difficulty and Features

The itinerary develops along the pebbly bed of the dry torrent for about 10 kilometers. The slope is generally moderate, but the uneven and stony ground requires a firm foot and proper footwear.

  • Difficulty: EE (Experienced Hikers) due to length and pebbly ground.
  • Elevation change: 250 meters (downhill).
  • Length: 10 km (one way).
  • Hiking time: About 3 and a half hours (one way).

During the summer months, temperatures inside the gorge can be very high: it is crucial to avoid the hottest hours and bring at least 3 liters of water. Along the trail, there are some natural shade spots provided by the large rock walls and holm oak forests.

Trail Snacks: Dry Sausage and Olives

In the backpack of the hiker facing the Codula di Luna, seasoned Sardinian sausage and cured olives are a must. Accompanied by a piece of carasau bread, these simple and nutritious foods represent the perfect traditional snack to recharge energies under the shade of a centuries-old juniper.
