Climbing in Ulassai: The Complete Guide to the Heels Crags

Climbing on the Heels of Ulassai: a complete guide to the most famous climbing sectors, the meeting of rock and the art of Maria Lai, and useful tips.

Over the years, Ulassai has become one of the undisputed capitals of sport climbing in the Mediterranean. Its majestic vertical walls and famous limestone "Tacchi" (Heels) offer hundreds of equipped routes for climbers from all over the world. But Ulassai is not just about sport: it is a magical place where climbing meets contemporary art.

Art and Verticality: Maria Lai's Legacy

The extraordinary rebirth of Ulassai as an artistic and sporting hub is inextricably linked to the figure of Maria Lai, the famous artist native to the village. Her most famous work, "Legarsi alla montagna" (To Bind Oneself to the Mountain, 1981), saw the entire community connect the houses of the town to the peaks of the Tacchi with a blue ribbon of fabric, a gesture of love and union between man and nature.

Today, climbers scaling the crags move in a true open-air museum. Several contemporary artworks are installed right along the approach paths and on the rock faces, creating a unique and evocative combination of athletic action and artistic expression.

The Main Sectors: Canyon and Babbo Natale

Ulassai's crags feature over 800 bolted routes. Among the most famous sectors are:

  • Canyon: A cool and shaded natural rocky gorge, ideal for climbing during the summer months. The routes are mostly vertical and technical on compact gray limestone.
  • Babbo Natale: A sun-exposed sector, perfect for winter climbing. It offers routes of various difficulties with a beautiful panoramic view of the valley below.
  • Millennium: Famous for its incredible orange overhangs of limestone shaped with tufa columns and pockets.

The bolting is excellent and constantly monitored by local associations. Grades range from 5a for beginners to extremely difficult routes (8c/9a) for professionals.

Post-Climb: Fresh Craft Beer

After an intense day on the wall fighting gravity, local tradition dictates a stop at the village bars to enjoy a fresh Sardinian craft beer. The perfect moment to share the day's achievements with other climbers and plan the next day's projects.
