Villagrande Strisaili: In the Heart of the World Blue Zone

Explore Villagrande Strisaili, the Sardinian village famous for male longevity. Discover the centenarians' diet, Santa Barbara Park, and local cured ham.

Perched on the steep slopes of the Gennargentu mountains in Ogliastra, at an altitude of about 700 meters, lies Villagrande Strisaili. This mountain village holds an extraordinary scientific record: it is internationally recognized as the epicenter of the Sardinian Blue Zone, the geographical area with the highest male longevity rate in the world. Here, men live as long as women, defying global demographic statistics in an unspoiled environment where nature still dictates the rhythms of daily life.

The Science of Longevity: The Villagrande Case

The longevity of Villagrande Strisaili is not a myth, but a phenomenon extensively documented by scientists and demographers from all over the world. The pioneering studies coordinated by doctors Gianni Pes and Michel Poulain, who right here coined the term "Blue Zone" by drawing a blue circle on the maps of the municipalities with the highest concentration of centenarians, have attempted to decipher this mystery.

The answers do not lie in a magic potion, but in a unique combination of factors:
- Natural Physical Exercise: The steep layout of the town forces residents to walk uphill daily. For generations, transhumance and work in the fields have kept the body active until late in life.
- The Traditional Diet: A frugal, zero-mile diet based on garden legumes, wild vegetables, fresh goat's milk rich in probiotics, and a moderate but constant consumption of Cannonau red wine rich in polyphenols.
- The Community Network: In the village, the elderly are never isolated; on the contrary, they are the pillar of the family (sa famillia) and the community, respected as keepers of the historical memory. This active aging reduces stress and promotes psychophysical well-being.

Nature and Regeneration: The Santa Barbara Park

To immerse oneself in the healthy atmosphere surrounding the town, there is no better place than the Santa Barbara Park. Located just a few minutes from the town center, this park is an oasis of peace dominated by a forest of secular holm oaks and oak trees.

The park is famous for its fresh natural springs and the spectacular waterfalls created by the stream running through the woods. The trails under the shade of the green canopy offer the ideal setting for regenerating walks, also suitable for families, culminating with a visit to the characteristic country church of Santa Barbara. The pure water gushing from the park's springs is considered by the inhabitants as another of the fundamental pieces for local health and longevity.

Culinary Excellence: The Cured Ham of Villagrande

The pearl of local gastronomy is undoubtedly the Prosciutto Crudo di Villagrande Strisaili. This cured ham boasts unique characteristics due to the traditional processing and curing methods.

The pigs, raised in the wild in the holm oak and cork oak forests of the Gennargentu, feed mainly on acorns (ghiande), roots, and wild herbs. The salting, extremely light compared to other Sardinian hams, preserves the sweetness of the meat. Curing takes place by exploiting the dry and crisp climate of Villagrande's altitudes, giving the ham an unmistakable, intense, and fragrant aroma.

In the area, bakery specialties such as coccoi prena (a small flatbread filled with potatoes, mint, and pecorino) and gathulis (golden fritters made with potatoes and local salted cheese, typical of the area) are also famous.
