Sport Climbing in Ogliastra

Over 800 bolted routes on the most beautiful limestone Tacchi in Europe

All year round (best Oct–May) ⚡ From 4a to 8c

Ogliastra is one of the most important sport climbing destinations in the Mediterranean. The limestone Tacchi — huge towers of dolomitic limestone rising from the landscape like natural cathedrals, visible from tens of kilometers away — offer vertical walls, overhangs, and corners that attract climbers from all over Europe every season. The rock is compact, the bolting with stainless steel fix bolts is reliable, and the routes cover all levels, from 4a for the absolute beginner to 8c for the elite athlete.

Ulassai is the undisputed capital: over 800 bolted routes on white limestone of exceptional quality, ranked among the top 10 sport climbing destinations in Southern Europe by major international guides. The Millennium sector, with its 100 overhanging routes from 5a to 8c, is probably the most photographed site in Sardinian climbing. But Ulassai is not alone: Jerzu offers long routes and multipitch climbs on the limestone towers of its Tacchi, with a wilder charm and less crowded environments; Baunei features seaside crags where you climb with the sound of the waves beneath your feet and the blue sea on the horizon.

Ogliastra's climate is among the best in Europe for climbing: autumn and spring offer ideal temperatures, summer is manageable by climbing at dawn or in shaded sectors, and winter is mild compared to any other continental destination. This combination of rock quality, variety of grades, and favorable climate has turned Ogliastra into a pilgrimage destination for Italian and international climbers, generating a growing economic impact that has revitalized villages that would otherwise have remained off the tourist path.

The Main Crags

Ulassai is the beating heart of climbing in Ogliastra. The sectors develop on the limestone Tacchi surrounding the village, with various orientations that allow climbing in all conditions. The Millennium sector — 100 routes on overhanging walls with pockets and tufa formations — is the pearl: here, international-level climbers meet, and an annual contest takes place, drawing athletes from all over Europe. The Canyon is the summer alternative: shaded and cool, with technical routes on vertical slabs. Jerzu completes the offering with long and multipitch routes on the towers of the Tacco di Tisiddu and the iconic Perda Liana.

The most famous sector: 100+ routes from 5a to 8c on overhanging limestone of exceptional quality. South-east exposure, perfect from morning to early afternoon. Pockets and tufa climbing, athletic style. Home to the annual international climbing contest.

For Beginners

Ogliastra is not only for expert climbers. The Su Stampu sector in Ulassai was designed specifically for beginners and families: low and well-bolted walls, routes from 4a to 5c, comfortable ground landings, and natural shade. Several certified mountain guides offer introductory courses with all equipment included: in just one day, you learn basic technique, understand crag safety, and experience the thrill of your first bolted route. The philosophy is simple: climbing is for everyone, and Ogliastra has the perfect terrain to start.

The sector dedicated to beginners: low walls (8-12 meters), well-bolted routes from 4a to 5c, and a comfortable flat grassy landing. Natural shade for most of the day. Ideal for families with children and introductory courses.

Practical tips

  • Bring a 70m rope: many routes in Ulassai are long and require a double rope (or long single rope)
  • Set of 12-15 quickdraws for the longer routes in advanced sectors
  • A helmet is mandatory in all sectors: limestone rock can shed loose stones from above
  • Soft climbing shoes are recommended for the athletic overhangs of Millennium; stiffer shoes for the Canyon slabs
  • Bring all gear from home: there is no climbing shop in Ulassai, the closest is in Cagliari
  • Chalk is essential: bring plenty of it
  • Climb in the early morning in south-facing sectors in summer; use the Canyon and Su Stampu in the afternoon
  • Respect the existing bolting: do not add bolts without coordination with the local group
  • The "Ulassai Climbing" guidebook can be purchased locally and covers all sectors with photos and diagrams
