Kayak and Canoe in Ogliastra

Explore inaccessible coves and sea caves paddling along the wildest coast in Italy

May–Sep From easy to medium-high

Kayaking is the most intimate and slow way to discover the Ogliastra coast. While motorboats skim past the coves with the noise of outboards, a kayak takes you inside the landscape: you hear the sound of waves breaking on the limestone cliffs, enter sea caves where the water shifts from azure to emerald green, and land on small white pebble beaches that no other means can reach. It is slow, silent, and deeply rewarding.

The Supramonte coast of Baunei is the main theater: 40 kilometers of vertical cliffs with no roads, no buildings, and no parking lots. The coves — Cala Mariolu, Cala dei Gabbiani, Cala Biriala, and Cala Sisine — are accessible only by sea or via challenging trails. By kayak, you can reach them all in a single day, with the freedom to stop wherever you like, snorkel in crystal-clear waters, and have lunch on a deserted beach.

To the south, the Arbatax and Tortolì area offers more accessible itineraries: the coast is less rugged, the waters generally calmer, and the starting points easily reachable by car. The Isola dell'Ogliastra, a few kilometers from Lotzorai, is the ideal destination for beginners: short distances, sheltered waters, and seabed rich in marine life. The artificial Lake Flumendosa (Lago del Flumendosa), on the border with Villagrande, offers a gentle, scenic alternative for those who prefer inland waters.

Kayak rental centers operate in Santa Maria Navarrese, Arbatax, and Tortolì. Many offer guided excursions with instructors who know every nook and cranny of the coast — a vital asset, especially for those venturing onto the Supramonte waters for the first time, where conditions can change rapidly with the wind and current.

Sea Excursions

Ogliastra's coastal routes are among the most spectacular in the Mediterranean. The journey from Santa Maria Navarrese to Cala Goloritzé along the Supramonte cliffs is simply unforgettable: 15 kilometers of limestone plunging into the sea, with stops in dreamlike coves. However, you must respect the sea: the mistral can blow up suddenly, currents along the vertical cliffs are unpredictable, and the return leg can become problematic for the inexperienced. Local guides are indispensable for this itinerary.

The classic and most spectacular itinerary: 15 km along the Supramonte cliffs with stops at Cala dei Gabbiani, Cala Mariolu, and Cala Biriala. Arriving at Cala Goloritzé by kayak, with the Aguglia looming ahead, is an unforgettable moment. Medium-high difficulty.

Half-day tour between Cala Mariolu, Cala dei Gabbiani, and Cala Sisine: the three most beautiful coves of the Supramonte in a single outing. Snorkeling opportunities at every stop. Requires good physical condition to handle the return paddle, often against the wind.

Coastal itinerary heading south from Arbatax: the red porphyry Rocce Rosse emerge underwater as well, creating spectacular scenery. Proceed towards Marina di Gairo and Coccorrocci among volcanic seabeds and wild beaches. Suitable for intermediate level.

Rivers, Lakes, and Family Routes

Not all kayaking in Ogliastra takes place in the open sea. The artificial Lago del Flumendosa, bordering Villagrande and Seui, offers calm waters and mountain vistas for those who prefer a gentler experience. Isola dell'Ogliastra in front of Lotzorai is the ideal starting point for families with children: a short one-kilometer crossing, shallow and clear waters, and the chance to explore the islet's shoreline looking for crabs and fish. Santa Maria Navarrese, with its small beach facing a panoramic islet, offers the perfect mini-itinerary for first-time kayakers.

Short crossing to the small islet of Lotzorai: 1.5 km of sheltered waters suitable for everyone. The seabed around the island is shallow and clear, with Posidonia meadows. Ideal for families and absolute beginners. Rental available on the beach.

Circumnavigation of the islet of Santa Maria Navarrese: a 3-4 km route exploring caves and rocky crevices. Calm waters, visible bottom, snorkeling opportunities. Perfect for children aged 8 and up with an adult.

Practical tips

  • Always start early in the morning: the mistral almost always picks up in the early afternoon, making return difficult
  • Check Windy.com and MeteoAM before every outing: do not improvise on the Supramonte sea
  • Never paddle alone on long itineraries along the Supramonte cliffs
  • Bring at least 2 liters of water per person: the Supramonte beaches have no springs
  • Always communicate your itinerary to someone on land before leaving
  • Mobile phones lose coverage along much of the Supramonte coast: bring a whistle and a visual signaling device
  • Waterproof SPF 50+ sunscreen is essential: the reflection from the white limestone amplifies UV rays
  • Sit-on-top kayaks are safer for beginners: more stable and easier to re-enter in case of capsize
