With just 560 inhabitants, Elini is the smallest municipality in Ogliastra. A perched gem with breathtaking views over the valley below. Here the landscape is the monument — and silence is the most precious souvenir.
The Villages of Silence
Where time stood still among stone and light
Inland Ogliastra shelters villages where silence is still an everyday luxury. Villages perched on limestone ridges with fewer than a thousand inhabitants, where front doors stay open and bread is still made in the communal oven. This itinerary is for those seeking the Sardinia that no longer exists elsewhere — the slow, stony and real one.

The Stops
The historic capital of Ogliastra, perched at 595 metres. The Lanusei Astronomical Observatory is one of the most important in Sardinia — the absence of light pollution makes the night sky a hypnotic spectacle.
The observatory holds public evenings — check the calendar on their website. Seeing Jupiter and its moons from here is unforgettable.
Ussassai is one of the most isolated villages in Sardinia. Five hundred souls surrounded by dense forests and banditry stories that still fuel the collective imagination today. Here authenticity is not a brand — it's the only option.
At 820 metres above sea level, Seui is the highest municipality in Ogliastra. The Spanish Prison (17th century) now houses an ethnographic museum. From here the Trenino Verde departs on one of the most scenic railway journeys in Europe.
The Trenino Verde Seui–Arbatax is a journey through time: 5 hours across bridges, tunnels and impenetrable woodland. Not to be missed.
