Tacchi & Canyons

Limestone cathedrals, ghost villages and impossible gorges

🔴 Challenging 3 days 4 stops 🛣️ 70 km 🌤️ March–June, September–November

The Tacchi d'Ogliastra are tabular mountains of dolomitic limestone that rise like medieval towers above the Mediterranean scrubland. This itinerary takes you through vertiginous canyons, secret caves and villages abandoned after floods and landslides — silent witnesses of a land that refuses to be tamed.

The Stops

1
Ulassai

Maria Lai's Tacco

⏱️ 1 day

Ulassai is dominated by its namesake Tacco, a 1,000-metre limestone wall beloved by climbers from all over the world. But it is also the village of Maria Lai, the artist who "stitched" the village to the mountain with light-blue fabric ribbons in her celebrated work Legarsi alla Montagna (1981).

✦ Tacco di Ulassai — rock climbing✦ Stazione dell'Arte (Maria Lai)✦ Su Marmuri Cave✦ Lequarci Waterfall
Local tip

Su Marmuri Cave is one of the largest in Europe: 850 metres long at a constant temperature of 10°C. Bring a fleece.

Osini

The Ghost Village and the Staircase

⏱️ 1 day

Osini Vecchio was abandoned after the devastating flood of 1951 and is today an evocative ghost village. From here starts the trail to the Scala di San Giorgio — a spectacular gorge that cuts through the namesake Tacco.

✦ Osini Vecchio — ghost village✦ Scala di San Giorgio✦ Trekking in the Tacchi
Local tip

The Scala di San Giorgio trail is narrow and vertiginous: not suitable for those with a fear of heights, but the reward is absolute.

Gairo

The Triple Village

⏱️ Half a day

Gairo is a unique case in Italy: three versions of the same village. Gairo Vecchio (a ghost village, abandoned in 1951), Gairo Taquisara (the new centre) and the ancient Terme di Santa Maria, known since Roman times.

✦ Gairo Vecchio — second ghost village✦ Terme di Santa Maria✦ Three versions of one village
Local tip

The thermal baths are being restored but the area is still accessible: the water flows hot and sulphurous, free of charge.

Jerzu

The Towers of Cannonau

⏱️ Half a day

The Tacchi of Jerzu are among the most majestic in Ogliastra — dolomitic towers looming over the village. At their feet grow the vines of the world's oldest Cannonau: after the effort of the canyons, a wine tasting is a must.

✦ Tacchi di Jerzu✦ Cantina Sociale — Cannonau tasting✦ Breathtaking panoramas
Local tip
